The Coaching Process:
Prior to the onset of the coaching relationship beginning, there is a research period. During this process, there is candid conversation with the coaching participant’s manager to gain an understanding about the culture and the business challenges and objectives. In addition, clarity and understanding of other training programs are shared in order to maximize the coaching relationship. There has been significant research that confirms the benefits of training programs. The combination of training programs reinforced by coaching has proven to be extremely impactful. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Public Personnel Management Magazine, employees who participated in training programs had a 22% increase in productivity. When training was combined with coaching, that figure jumped to 88%!
The entire coaching process is focused on obtaining results. Given that coaching is a partnership, goals are established and agreed upon and measurable outcomes are identified that facilitates measurement of progress. The goal is to put the learning into action. In order for this to happen, the coach has to create an environment where a participant can share concerns, issues and opportunities
candidly. It is for this reason that coaching sessions are kept confidential. The only exception to this parameter would be if the coach perceived the employee to be in emotional or physical harm.
Coaching sessions are usually conducted 3 times per month. Each coaching session last approximately 45 minutes. These sessions are usually conducted by phone but can occur face to face. During these sessions the coach engages the participant by asking questions, brainstorming, drawing analogies based upon real life examples. All of these activities lead the participant to examine their current behavior and develop an action plan to adapt or change the behavior. To reinforce the learning, quarterly group action learning workshops are offered. These workshops provide yet another opportunity for the employee to put the new behavior into practice in a safe environment.
